How Tanning Beds Affect Your Eyes

When you go for a day out in the sun, you usually wear dark-colored shades in order to protect your eyes from the harsh glare of the sun. This is good practice because the cornea of the eyes is extremely sensitive, so they deserve all the protection that you can get against the glare of the sun. Just imagine how much more damage the cornea of the eyes would have if it comes in direct contact with Ultraviolet rays from a tanning bed.

Tanning beds are indeed a good way to acquire a natural looking tan – but before lying down on that tanning bed – there are certain precautions that you need to take. One of the most important aspects of tanning is to use protective goggles for your eyes. If a tanning salon attendant asks you to just place a wet towel over your eyes during the tanning process – this is a big no-no! The UV rays coming from the tanning bed lamps produce a really strong glare that may damage the cornea of your eyes. Without the protective goggles, your eyes will be subject to this strong, UV glare that may cause long-time damage to your eyes, and it can even result to blindness. Cataract is another problem which can be avoided by using the proper eye gear when using a tanning bed. To prevent these eye problems from occurring you should make it a rule to never have a tanning session with your eyes unprotected – always keep a stock of the proper, protective eye gear to shield your eyes from the glare of the UV rays from the tanning bed.
